A new favorite place: The National Building Museum (April 26, 2000)

I spent my Sunday afternoon dodging little kids at the National Building Museum (it seems like the exhibit of the White House in Miniature has become the Tourist Attraction To See After Lunch At Planet Hollywood lately) and stumbled across an exhibit on the Corner Store that I thought I had missed and finally got a chance to see.

We had a bodega in my neighborhood in Lima--I hadn't thought of the place in years, and I have twice this week, after I saw the exhibit and then after I browsed through Did You Bring Bottles?. Now, nostalgia is what I have--i do remember going there every Thursday to buy the new issue of the Smurfs comic book and every now and then bought cheap toys made in China or the occasional chocolate bar with some fondness-- but for some reason I still have the color of the building firmly ingrained in my mind, the grit on the rolling gate still etched in that vision, and the dotted tiles that marked the entrance remaining like flashes. They did take bottles -- Teem was what we'd buy. But on...

What's in store this weekend for me: Skipping the Millenuim March on Washington going to hear Ira Glass lecture instead. Novelties are slim in the coming, though it's hard to top getting a new job; it doesn't suck too much that it's about programming all day for Palms...
