Houoli Makahiki Hou (January 15, 2000)

Just as first update, pending the completion of my new Official Millenial Y2-Compliant site of the Year 2000 of the new Hawaiian 21st Century Site.

I spent the first two weeks at my friend Dylan's house in Kalama Valley, a suburb of Honolulu. I've had no troubles waking up at 7 AM as the sun rises over the eastern Pacific, its vermillion rays streaming in through the balcony windows of the Williams' two-story ocean-view Swiss-style chalet.

We watched world-wide coverage of the Millenium Event of the Century through ABC/Disney's creative construction of celebration throughout the world. We were particularly amused by the I'Kiribati passing of the torch to signal the coming of a new Millenium of peace and prosperity. All it needed were a couple of animated crabs singing lyrics by Tim Rice. After seeing Greece receiving the new year at the Parthenon with a full choral motif, after seeing the light show next to the pyramids and the Eiffel Tower bursting into a blinding cascade of sparks, we saw Dick Clark counting as a ball fell 20 feet behind a Discover Card sign.

We received the New Year one whole hour after Peter Jennings signed off saying that the whole world was now in 2000; we skipped the fireworks downtown, as some particularly money-supplied residents of Kalama valley decided they would burn it all, including the mondo 2000 spark overhead exploding things they use at waterfront pyrotechnical displays. A dark haze, much like the smog of LA, wafted acros the valley off towards the Molokai channel.

Dylan's friend Jason provided the Veuve Cliquot and crystal stemware, and also provided the 7:04 AM view of the rising sun from his family's beachside residence in Waimanalo.

There will be more to come.
